In its first experiential collaboration, Warping Theories did not seek to frame the narrative. It chose to disappear into it.
In 2021, Warping Theories chose not to perform as a brand in the conventional sense. It did not dominate the room, dictate meaning, or seek spectacle for its own sake. Instead, it did something rarer. It stepped back. It became a base layer.
At the centre of the experience stood a vintage Ambassador car. An object deeply embedded in Indian visual memory, utilitarian, familiar, almost invisible through overexposure. Over the course of the event, Santanu Hazarika live-painted the car, allowing it to transform gradually, stroke by stroke, moment by moment. There was no “before” and “after” reveal engineered for impact. The becoming was the point.
Warping Theories positioned itself exactly where it always has its greatest strength: as a quiet constant. Like a well-cut garment that does not compete with the body wearing it, the brand acted as a classic blank canvas. Neutral, grounded, intentional. This restraint allowed Santanu’s visual language to unfold without interruption, without negotiation, without dilution. The clothes did not try to speak over the art. They listened.
What made the collaboration truly experiential was its refusal to remain a one-way exchange. This was not art to be consumed at a polite distance. Guests were invited into the process itself. A dedicated graffiti wall became an extension of the canvas, opening space for collective interpretation. People added lines, symbols, fragments of thought. The activation shifted from observation to participation, from spectacle to presence.
In that moment, authorship loosened. Meaning stopped being owned. The experience became shared.
The Ambassador, the wall, the bodies moving through the space, the clothes being worn, the paint drying in real time. Everything existed in flux. Nothing was rushed toward completion. In an age obsessed with outcomes, with drops, with instant visuals engineered for digital afterlives, this collaboration insisted on slowness. We trusted the process over polish.
This was not a collaboration designed to be archived only through photographs. It lived most fully in the act itself. In the time spent watching colour take shape. In the hesitation before making a mark on the wall. In the collective awareness that something was unfolding and would never exist in the same way again.
Warping Theories has always understood clothing as something you grow into rather than something you merely wear. This collaboration extended that philosophy beyond fabric. It treated art, space, and audience the same way. As living systems. As evolving forms.
Looking back, Warping Theories × Santanu Hazarika was not about a painted car or a branded activation. It was about permission. Permission to slow down. Permission to participate without performance. Permission to let meaning remain unfinished.
